Mrs. Clarke began her prolific quilting career in 1994 when she joined the African American Quilters of Baltimore. Since joining the guild, she has exhibited her work in numerous venues throughout Maryland and Pennsylvania, including:

  • The Philadelphia Black Doll Show
  • The Urban League of Baltimore
  • The Banneker-Douglas Museums, which include a photo of her quilt, "African Mask", in the Washington Post's "Weekend" section
  • The Enoch Pratt Library
  • Retail quilt exhibitions Seminole Sampler and G Street fabrics in Rockville, MD

Through recognition of the guild's activities and art, she has also provided many museum sponsored demonstrations of her expertise in the art of "paper piecing", a unique quilting technique. Past exhibitions and demonstrations include the following:

  • The Textile Museum in Washington, DC
  • The Walters Art Gallery
  • The Flag House

She also taught a two day course on paper piecing for the BKC Quilt Artist Group in Columbia, MD. Her latest paper piecing demonstration and exhibition at the Baltimore Museum of Art was held on May 14, 2011.

Mrs. Clarke was given the great honor of being commissioned by the Maryland Department of Social Services' Women, Infants, and Children's program (WIC) to provide three quilts for permanent display in their headquarters building in Baltimore, MD.

Mrs. Clarke is an artist whose spirituality and love infuse her work with joy and committed sense of sharing this gift with everyone. Thank you, Bernice Clarke for sharing your gift to the world and for sharing your membership with us at Morning Star Baptist Church of Christ.
