Bernice
Clarke is a native of Baltimore, MD and a member of Morning Star Baptist Church
of Christ since 1934. She was a former member of the Star's ministry's. They
included the Wick's Progressive Club, the Women's Missionary, the Trustee Board,
and she was Director of the Preschool Department.
Mrs. Clarke began her prolific quilting career in 1994 when she joined the African American Quilters of Baltimore. Since joining the guild, she has exhibited her work in numerous venues throughout Maryland and Pennsylvania, including:
Through recognition of the guild's activities and art, she has also provided many museum sponsored demonstrations of her expertise in the art of "paper piecing", a unique quilting technique. Past exhibitions and demonstrations include the following:
She also taught a two day course on paper piecing for the BKC Quilt Artist Group in Columbia, MD. Her latest paper piecing demonstration and exhibition at the Baltimore Museum of Art was held on May 14, 2011.
Mrs. Clarke was given the great honor of being commissioned by the Maryland Department of Social Services' Women, Infants, and Children's program (WIC) to provide three quilts for permanent display in their headquarters building in Baltimore, MD.
