The Enoch Pratt Free Library, where a family can spend hours of enjoyment, is one of the oldest free public library systems in the United States. Their mission statement is To provide equal access to information and services that support, empower, and enrich all who pursue knowledge, education, cultural enrichment, and lifelong learning. The Central Library of Baltimore City's public library system, the Enoch Pratt Free Library, was designated the State Library Resource Center (SLRC) by the General Assembly in 1971.

This designation and accompanying State support allow all Maryland citizens to have access to a public library whose resources are unparalleled in the State. SLRC works with regional, local public, school, special and academic libraries which allows materials and information to be shared state- wide. SLRC provides services to Marylanders and serves as a back-up information resource for local libraries and their customers.

There are many branches of the library all over the city. The Brooklyn Branch is located 3 blocks east of Hanover and Patapsco, in the heart of Brooklyn. The Canton Branch, erected in 1886, is the last remaining of the four original Pratt Branches. It is on the National Registry of Historic Places and occupies a unique location at the intersection of O'Donnell Street and S. Ellwood Avenue in the heart of Canton. The Pennsylvania Avenue Branch is located at the intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue and North Avenue in West Baltimore's 4th Councilmatic district. The branch opened its doors in 1953. These are just to name a few. Take a visit to the library and enjoy.
