When is the last time you used the train as a mode of transportation? Do your senior relatives and friends remember when the train was the only fast way to travel? As a child, did you ever have or play with model trains? Well, here's a chance to learn some history about trains and see real trains up close. Take a tour of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Museum.
The Baltimore & Ohio Museum possesses the oldest, most historic and most comprehensive American railroad collections in the world. Dating from the beginning of American railroading, the collection contains locomotives and rolling stock, historic buildings, and small objects that document the impact of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad (B&O) on the growth and development of early railroading and cover almost every aspect of an industry that left a permanent mark on the folklore and culture of America.
The Museum's locomotive and rolling stock collection contains many unique examples of historically significant pieces from the B&O and other Maryland railroads and includes the finest collection of 19th century steam locomotives. The museums roster of locomotives and rolling stock represent the first, last, best, or only of their kind in existence today.
Located at 901 West Pratt Street in Baltimore, MD, the Museum is approximately ten minutes from Baltimore's popular Inner Harbor area and is easily accessible from Interstate 95 and the Baltimore Beltway, I-695. Entrance to the Museum grounds is located at the intersection of West Pratt Street and Poppleton Street. There is free off-street, on-site parking for visitors. The Museum hours are Monday - Saturday, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. and Sunday, 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. The last admission is one half hour prior to closing time. Please note that the Museum is CLOSED on the following holidays: Easter Sunday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve, and New Year's Day. The museum has a food and drink concession and vending area. There is also a railroad gift store. Special events are scheduled such as a turntable demonstration on Saturday, June 13, 2009 and a 15% off purchase at the museum store on Father's Day June 21, 2009 when Dad visits.
