Sandra LaRue Andrews Garnes (B.K.A. LaRue) was born
June 21, 1946 to Ruben and Beatrice Andrews. She is a native of Baltimore MD and
attended Dunbar Junior/Senior High School. After graduation LaRue furthered her
education at these prestigious institutions: Coppin State College, Johns Hopkins
University, College of Notre Dame and others. She has earned Masters Degrees and
others.
Mrs. Garnes is the proud parent of one Son, Milton TaRon Garnes, Sr. (B.K.A. "Tinker"). A loving quote of hers is, "I am well pleased with his outcome on life, following the steps of a child haven been reared in a Christian family." With delight she speaks of her grandchildren as follows: Jaida A. Garnes, age 9, 4th grader at Randallstown Elementary (Gifted & Talented Program -A student in every subject); Kelci A. Garnes a 1st grader at the same school (also advanced); Milton TaRon Garnes, Jr., Age 13 months; already learning the computer world. To this I add. 'Look out world; great things are in store!'
La Rue is lovingly known by several names. Some of them are Mom, Gann Gann, RueRue, Mamma Garnes and Auntie Rue.
Mrs. Garnes was employed in the Baltimore City Public School System. While there she wore many hats and was responsible for a variety of positions. Her exemplary performance earned her numerous acknowledgements, recognition awards and certificates. LaRue retired as Assistant Principle in 2010. Her employment in the school system lasted forty two years.
LaRue Garnes joined Morning Star Baptist Church in 1957 at the age of eleven. She consistently demonstrates her love for the Lord by the dedication and attention she gives to every task she is called on to perform. She holds the following positions at the Star: Deacon Board member, Chairwoman of the Board of Christian Education, Church School member, member of several choirs and is the Secretary of the Pastor's Aide. Several scriptures dear to her heart are John 3:16 "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life," and Mathew 5:9 - "Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God." Deacon Garnes states, "If God, our creator, can give his only and best then, why can't we? Our sufferings, pains, and hardships can't compare to what Jesus had to encounter. Also, keeping peace, gives us practice in promoting positive outlooks on situations and in turn, it helps to alleviate stress and other hardships."
On May 12, 2011 Deacon LaRue Garnes was inducted as the first female deacon to "break the glass ceiling" in the Baptist Deacon's Conference of Baltimore and Vicinity and its Auxiliaries, Inc. after having been in existence for 138 years. She will ever be grateful to Deacon Alvin J. Bagley, Past President of the conference and Deacon James Gardner, present President and its members for their spiritual vision. The Star praises God for this Deacon's dedication.
In closing this special lady would like to leave us with her inspiring message: "As you travel this life's journey keep a positive spirit and one that shows true "brotherly love" that is so needed in this society today, and not one of "brotherly shove," which we see daily. As you increase in knowing God's plan for us (via the Bible) you can see that love is displayed throughout the Books. Let us not use our eyes as diggers and our tongues as shooting spears. Instead, let us encourage and empower one another the best that we can and let us conform to the principles of God's Word and watch His power work in us."
I thank you, Deacon Sandra LaRue Garnes, for your patience and timely responses to me as we conversed. You are truly one of our "Stars".
