In 1896 the Senior Usher Board of the Morning Star Baptist Church was formed under the leadership of George Swift. Bro. Swift served as President for over forty years. Clifford Worthen, Moses Gardner, Phillip Wells, Mary Robinson, Amelia Alston, Martha Whack, Anna McCormick, James Giles and Mary Ervin are other Presidents that have left their mark as leaders of the Senior Usher Board and role models for the Junior Ushers.
The Combined Usher Boards (Junior and Senior) are affiliated with the Interdenominational Church Ushers Association (ICUA) of MD, Inc., Baltimore Unit. This also makes us affiliated with the ICUA of MD, Inc., the Eastern Regional Ushers and the National United Church Ushers Association of America (NUCUAA). Our Combined Usher Boards have a rich history and have had many current and past officers at various levels within the Usher’s Association. Marion L. Harris was the Maryland State President for 30 years; Lloyd C. Morse Jr., served as the Baltimore Unit President and National Jr. President; Elaine Harmon, Michelle Striplett, David Green, Mary Robinson, Wayne Boyd and Jaclyn Green have also held various positions in the Usher’s Association
The Usher’s motto is: “If Every Usher Was Just Like Me, What Would This Usher Board Be?” The beloved scripture of the Ushers is Psalm 84:10 (KJV) “For a day in thy courts is better than a thousand. I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness.”
We are Christian Ushers working for our God.
Meetings
The Senior Usher Board meets each 2nd Saturday at 12 p.m., The Junior Usher Board meets each 3rd Saturday at 1:00pm.
Annual Events
The Combined Ushers Anniversary is held on the 4th Sunday in January every year. Ushers from all over the city and state come to join our anniversary celebration.
Membership Requirements
We invite you to come join us by giving your time and talents to the Lord through the ministry of ushering. We do have the following requirements:
- We ask that you be a professing Christian
- A member of Morning Star Baptist Church
